Status of Rural Women in Bangladesh

Sujon Ahmed, Dhaka, 05 April: Yesterday an international seminar on the status of rural women in Bangladesh was held and many social workers from different countries attended it. Most of the speakers opine that in Bangladesh, especially in rural areas the status of women is low and poor. They have no freedom of speech, movement, and choice. Everywhere they are considered inferior, weak, and unworthy.

They have no free social or economic status. They are totally dependent on their parents or husbands. They have no individuality, no aspiration, and ambition in their life. One social worker of our country said that that all of their movements, activities, and opinions are settled by their male counterparts. Their only duty is to prepare foods and drinks for the members of their family and to bring up their children.

A village woman has nothing to do in the important affairs of her family. Nobody cares whether she has anything to say or not. She is deprived of the right to express her thoughts and opinions. Shutting up her mouth, she has to suppress all of her hopes, dreams, and aspirations in the softest corner of her heart. She suffers alone, cries silently, and feels helpless finding herself in an ocean of negligence and repression.

Some speakers opine that there has been a significant change in Bangladesh nowadays. Women are no longer confined within the boundaries of their home. They are now entering the outside workforce. They are joining a wide range of professions to earn and become self-reliant. Thus the real picture of the status of rural women got clarified in the speech of the speakers.
