Dowry System
Bangladesh has been facing many problems since her birth in 1971. With the hard labour of the patriot citizens of this country, she has been able to enlist her name in the list of developing countries. Though she is prospering day by day, there are some problems that stand on her way of advancement. Dowry, the social curse, is one of them.

Dowry means property or money brought by a bride to her husband when they get married. It is a curse for the modern civilization. Nowadays the system of giving and taking dowry in marriage has struck deeper roots inBangladesh. It this tradition of dowry was not created overnight. It took hundreds of years to be established in our society.

Illiteracy, poverty and the greed of bride-groom are the main causes of this heinous system. In Bangladesh this is seen to be a major problem. In the Bangladeshi society this system is treated as a serious curse, yet it is exercised by the people of our country. In most cases, parents are bound to pay dowry for the sake of their daughters. But sometimes we find that some parents pay dowry willingly. They give their son-in-law gold ornaments, motor bike, TV, fridge etc. as gift but these are nothing but dowry.

There are a section of greedy people who think it is their right to get dowry from their in-laws’ house. Most of the parents are poor. They give word that they will pay after marriage. But they cannot keep their words for poverty and bring about untold sufferings for their daughters. This leads to chaos and hellish unhappiness. The greedy husbands torture their wives for dowry. Poor parents sometimes sell their land and property to meet the demand of their son-in-laws. Death of wife in the hand of dowry demanding husband is a common scenario in our society.

However, the first thing to be done to stop this malpractice is to grow awareness among all. Movement against the dowry system should be launched right now. We can get rid of this social vice by taking social reformative work urgently.
