My Visit to a Baishakhi Mela

The Pahela Baishakh is the first day of Bangla New Year. It comes with a great festivity. In keeping with the age-old tradition, people observe the day with enjoyment. The day is celebrated with much zest and joy all over the country. Different programmes are held on this day. Among them ‘Baishakhi Mela’ is the most enjoyable. It is such a fair that upholds our own culture and tradition. It is almost held every nook and corner of our country.

However, last year I went to my village home and visited the ‘Baishakh Mela’ arranged in our village. I went there with some of my friends. There was a big crowd in the fair. It was held under a big banyan tree where people could gather easily. The villagers in cheerful mood were visiting the fair and were buying necessary traditional items. There was variety of items including clay dolls, utensils, wooden furniture, different hand-made show-pieces, foods, sweets, cakes and so on. Circus parties, Jatra parties, puppet show and magic shows were the special attractions of the fair.

I noticed that the people of all walks of life attended the fair and were enjoying themselves. They were found very cheerful when they were buying and selling different things. I found there many local artisans who were performing different folk songs in the fair. However, I enjoyed the fair very much. As it is a part of our tradition and culture, we should work to flourish it.
